All About Facial Serums

PICT1898

I don’t believe in adding in more products into your skin care routine then needed, so you might be wondering why I’ve added serums to my line!

First off, I use them all the time! Why? Because serums are liquid tonics that are packed with vitamins, anti-oxidants and natural ingredients that contain active properties that target specific concerns. So if there’s something specific you want to work on, serums are an easy way to add some extra oomph to your routine!

Secondly, serums are formulated to penetrate deep into your skin so they can heal and target specific concerns. They are able to penetrate deeper than moisturizers and can help restore skin to a balanced state (and isn’t that the point? 🙂

” But I already use a moisturizer! Why add a serum?”

Although serums can be hydrating (my Hydration Serum is designed to do just that!), their main purpose is to add nutrients deep into your skin that a moisturizer isn’t able to reach. However, keep your moisturizer in your routine! Applying your moisturizer after you apply a serum will lock the serum into your skin allowing the serum to do its best work without evaporating into the air.

Hydration Serum

What makes the Hydration Serum so awesome …

Sometimes a moisturizer isn’t enough to hydrate unbalanced skin! Why? Because your skin needs a balance of water and oils to stay balanced and keep it’s acid mantle intact  (moisturizers only provide the oil portion of the equation). The skin’s acid mantle is your naturally protective layer of sebum.  Without it, your skin (and system) is open to damage, infection, and oil imbalance.

Serums and Mists provide the water part of the balanced skin equation. Dehydrated skin is different from simply dry skin. Dry skin can be cured with moisturizers. Dehydrated skin on the other hand, has a lack of water (not oils), and a moisturizer isn’t enough.  That’s where my hydration serum and mist comes in.

It is possible to have dry AND dehydrated skin. In fact, it’s common. But just as common is dehydrated OILY skin. My hydration serum and mist are the answer to dehydrated skin! Start with one, and add the other if needed. See how to use a mist, serum and moisturizer together under the “how to use” section.

Dehydrated skin is a bad thing! It leads to all kinds of problems including break outs (see below), congested pores, poor circulation, and poor texture. It also means your natural acid mantle can’t do its job: protecting you!

But Batty! I have a question! ….

“But my skin is oily! The last thing I need is a hydration serum!” Think again!! Often skin produces excess oil as a response to being dehydrated!

“But isn’t a moisturizer enough?” Not always.  Moisturizers don’t penetrate as deeply as a serum can. If your skin is dry even after moisturizing regularly, you need to add a serum to your routine.

“I can’t use this! I have acne prone skin!” Actually, it might be just what your acne prone skin needs to balance itself! Many people break out due to dry skin! Why? Because when your skin is dry and flaky, there’s a huge increase in dead skin cells sitting on the top of your pores. Those dead skin cells clog up your pores when they block oils from exiting your pores (and tada! You have yourself a pimple!). By adding a hydrating serum to your routine, the serum can penetrate deep into the layers of your skin and hydrate the layers that your moisturizer hasn’t been able to reach. Follow up your serum with a moisturizer and you’ll lock in all those hydrating ingredients.  Your skin will drink it in and it will thank you! A serum and moisturizer combo is to your skin what a refreshing glass of fresh squeezed lemonade is to you on a hot summer day! Aww, refreshing!

What makes the Flourish & Nourish Serum so awesome …

Mature skin needs extra support as skin turn over slows down and moisturize is easily lost – not to worry though! The Flourish & Nourish Serum is packed with exactly what mature skin needs to stay soft, supple, and balanced.

Specifically, the ingredients in this serum:

  • support skin cell turn over
  • hydrate and softens up skins’ texture (which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines)
  • provides anti-inflammatory properties
  • reintroduces essential nutrients that are depleted over time
  • address years of environmental damage and stress (such as sun, wind, dry air, pollution, etc)
  • reverses dull, parched skin
  • helps to balance hormones

 Bloom Serum

Detox Support

What makes the Bloom Serum so awesome …

Nobody wants the large organ in their body (our skin!) to be filled with pollutants, irritants, and dirt! Detoxing your skin is one of the best things you can do for it (next to trashing harsh chemical based products!).  If you haven’t done a full detox yet, check out my Detox Kit.

This serum helps boost the detoxifying powers of all my products – especially when used in conjunction with the Detox Kit! The Bloom serum is made with ingredients that purify your skin and helps balance the production of your sebum (your skin’s natural oily barrier).  Additionally, the ingredients in this serum are protective, toning, regenerating, protect against free radicals (hello anti-oxidants!), contain vitamin A & E, and helps prevent the growth of/destroys bacteria (super important when detoxing as the first stage of clearing up moderate to severe acne!).

After Acne Serum

What makes the After Acne Serum so awesome …

After you’ve got your acne under control, it’s time to repair any damage or symptoms that might be left behind from a long-term fight with acne! You still have acne prone skin to consider while tackling symptoms such as residual redness, enlarged pores, a blotchy complexion and acne scars. That’s where the Acne Repair line comes in. It starts with the Acne Repair Kit, which is boosted by After Acne Serum.

The After Acne Serum is a concentrated dose of natural healing ingredients that have one goal in mind: make any signs or symptoms of acne a thing of the past! Specifically, the serum targets hyperpigmentation (uneven skin tone, redness, blotchiness), rough/uneven texture, mild/occasional breakouts, scaring from previous breakouts, enlarged pores, and inflammation.

What makes the Skin Support Serum so awesome …

Skin Support Serum is made with natural ingredients and is recommend for those who are experiencing skin problems due to hormonal imbalance.  Take a look at the break down of ingredients and their benefits below:

  • Wild Yam Root – Helps balance hormonal breakouts and flare ups (such as flare ups of acne, rosacea, or eczema). It’s also an anti-inflammatory.
  • Red Clover Blossom – A blood cleansing and nutritive herb useful in inflammatory skin conditions.
  • Chaste Tree Berry – Is the superior hormone balancing herb for women (and as such, it helps balance hormonal breakouts and flare ups)
  • Burdock Root – A gentle yet effective herb for bringing the body back into balance. As an anti-microbial it is used for skin eruptions/blemishes and a variety of skin conditions.
  • Sarsaparilla Root – Traditionally used as part of a “spring clean” or health detox as it is known for being a great  blood cleansing tonic. It’s also useful in calming inflammatory reactions (which are often the cause of skin problems!)

BONUS: The Red Clover Blossom also fights acne causing bacteria! If you think bacteria might be the cause of your acne, see this blog post for how to fight it!

What makes the Rosacea Serum so awesome …

This serum helps calm inflammation, sooth irritated, sore skin, and diminishes redness. I’ve had picked the best ingredients Mother Nature has to offer to reverse rosacea! They are ingredients that are regenerating, soothing, are similar to your skin’s natural lubricant (sebum), nourishing, softening, healing, deeply penetrating, moisturizing, calming, and have excellent anti-pigmentation properties!

Acne B.O.P. Serum

store_mainpicture_template

What makes the Acne B.O.P. Serum so awesome …

When blackheads, excess oil, and enlarged congested pores have over stayed their welcome, add my Acne B.O.P. serum to your routine to give them the boot!  This serum is designed as a concentrated treatment for very specific problem (problems that just happen to be the biggest culprits of acne breakouts and lowered self-esteem). In fact, this serum tackles “the big 3” problems so well, it’s named after them!

  • B – Blackheads .. This serum helps detox & purify those bad boys!
  • O – Oil .. This serum balance excessive oil production. When this is balanced and skin is exfoliated regularly, acne is stopped before it can start.
  • P – Pores … as in enlarged, congested pores. The serum helps wash out and clear up congestion so pores can heal and relax.

The ingredients in this serum help balance oil production, clear out congested enlarged pores, and help purify blackheads (bye bye blackheads!). If you’re serious about clearing up acne, start with the Acne Prone Skin Care Kit, and add this serum to your routine!

(pst.. if you know your acne is also being caused by unbalanced hormones, hormonal changes, or bacteria, also add the Skin Support Serum).

How to use serums

: Apply your serum after applying your mist (if you’re using one), and before your moisturizer. While moisturizers help lock serums into your skin, serums help lock mists into your skin!  You don’t have to wait for the mist to fully absorb before applying your serum.  But you should wait a few minutes between applying your serum and moisturizer.

: Apply any time after you wash your face

: Since serums are hydrating, they can be a great alterative to a thick moisturizer during the hottest most humid days of summer! Skip the moisturizer during the day and opt to use it at night instead.

: During the winter, our skin needs extra help staying hydrated and protected from the elements. So, layer-up your protection by using a mist, serum and moisturizer before heading out into the cold (or spending a lot of time in the dry indoor air!).
